Free antivirus software

Biggest question i get is where can users download a free antivirus that is going to protect them fully from being attacked from trojans, worms and viruses. The answer is yes there is free software out there but No, you won’t be fully protected. If you’re going to take the route of installing a FREE antivirus software then best to have a very good anti-malware program installed on your pc along with it for extra protection.

AVG is the first one i recommend to any user. Followed by Avast-Antivirus. Both are good free programs that will find the most recent threats. AVG has updates regularly and i’ve had it running on one of my pc’s for about 4 years. So far so good but there have been known trojans that have past the security of AVG. When installing free antivirus – scan and update frequently just to be safe.

If you’re a little iffy on free software and would like to purchase a Full version of antivirus software, then here are some trial links you can use.

Laptop or Desktop?

Nowadays lots of people are ditching the old desktop and buying a laptop.  In terms of price, laptops are considerable more expensive than desktops.

I use my desktop at home and work, and my laptop when I’m on the go. The desktop is more comfortable.  The keyboard is well positioned for my wrists and the screen is at eye level.  Price is also a factor with more and more desktops along with their screens are going for under $500. With a desktop, you also don’t have to worry about bumps and scratches compared to the laptop that can get abused if not careful.

The flexibilty of a laptop is pretty much the deciding factor.  With many establishments adding Wifi to their environment, laptops now are not only restricted to a home or an office. People are able to surf the internet nowadays while sitting in the park or waiting for a bus. Space is also the biggest sell. Don’t need much room for the laptop as it can sit on any flat surface.  Because of their smaller size, repairs and upgrades will also be more expensive as the labor is more tideous. Also theft is important and all laptop owners should have a lock.

I actually know quite of few laptop users that keep their laptop docked on a desk all the time. Not a great idea, as you’ll never give a chance for your battery to discharge. Keeping it powered all the time, will shortened the life of the battery.

So basically the choice of a laptop or desktop really depends on your status – if you’re an adult with a professional lifestyle – then the laptop would be ideal. If you have a family with children then i would go with a desktop. Again everyone’s needs are different, There is no one right answer. However, weigh the pros and cons that should help you come to a solid decision.

Save YouTube videos on your harddrive

Don’t you hate it when you get on your Favorites on YouTube and see that one of your videos is no longer available? With mediaconverter.org you can have all your videos on your desktop for your constant viewing pleasure completely free! I was looking for a simple file converter so i can easily watch my favorite clips or listen to my favorite song. I fell upon Mediaconverter.org and really like it. It is very easy to use and so quick in converting files. As you see in the pic below, in order for the conversion to take place – you must copy and paste the link of your video into the Conversion Wizard. Next step, choose the type of file you want to turn it into. For a video you can choose mpg. There’s a neat box that says save default setting, so you don’t have to keep choosing those options if you have more than 1 file to convert. Once the file is converted – it will then ask you to download the file on your desktop.

I started using it for videos only, until i realized that i can take my favorite songs from YouTube and convert them to MP3 files, to which i then burn onto a music cd. The quality is just as good as if you’re listening to it online. Some other file types that can be converted are  flv, 3gp, wmv, mpg, mp4, avi, psp, ogg, mp3, wav, doc, xls, ppt, odt, ods, odp, pdf and many other file types. Also if you can’t find what you’re looking for on YouTube – try these other sites: youtubetomp3.net, Break.com, Dailymotion, LiveVideo, MetaCafe, or Veoh.

Alternative to Internet Explorer 7

There are many web browsers out there that you can download and surf the web with nowadays. IE7 is a major target for spyware, viruses, and trojans. They install themselves within the browser and totally disable your internet surfing. Once you’re infected, if you don’t have another web browser installed then you can not access the interent. Nowadays many users download an alternative opensource browser and safely surf with those programs.

Most notably FireFox, is very fast, secure, and is easy to use and navigate. The user interface is straightforward and uncomplicated. There are numerous features that Firefox has. One of them is the popup blocking capability. You no longer have to see all those frustrating popup windows since the browser will take cake of them. Like IE7,  Firefox also allows you to use tabs to open new web pages instead opeing a new window. When you download a file, it will be automatically saved to your desktop. For those who like to access a search engine quickly, you will appreciate the built in Google toolbar. Your Firefox toolbar will also include usual features like bookmarks, history, and text size.

Other Browsers to also consider:  Google Chrome Opera Safari
